Obsession was one of the biggest box office hits ever, making over $525 million worldwide off of a budget of less than $1 million. And just like Spider-Man: Brand New Day took inspiration from The LEGO Batman Movie, Obsession took inspiration from Jared Leto's Joker in Suicide Squad of all places.

Obession director Curry Barker explained the inspiration behind Nikki's behavior in the party scene in an interview with Entertainment Weekly:

What's really funny is when she's behind her like that and she's just standing there, that was inspired by something I saw in the Suicide Squad, actually. I've never said this. Not the James Gunn one, the one before. There's a scene where Joker just stands behind this guy for and then he like puts his hand on his shoulder and he like jumps like that.

And I was just like what if what if she just like stood behind her. And you didn't know is she about to stab her, is she about to you know... what is she going to do? And then she pulls the chair back and by that time you're so like disturbed by it that that even just the chair pulling back is like "oh god what is she...". And so it's playing playing with just the not knowing what she's going to do next.

For reference, here's the scene from Suicide Squad that Barker was referring to between Jared Leto and Ike Barinholtz:
