Jesse Eisenberg's performance as Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman was polarizing. Some people loved his Mark Zuckerberg inspired performance, while others flat out hated it. Unfortunately for Eisenberg, his performance caught the attention of the Golden Raspberry Awards, commonly known as Razzies, which are parody awards presented for the worst films and performances of the year.

At a talk at the BFI London Film Festival earlier today (via Variety), Eisenberg explained that his Razzie win prevented him from being able to get cast in big studio movies.

“Listen, a lot of it just came from fear,” he said of his career pivot. “I couldn’t get into movie studio parts anymore because I had won a Raspberry Award from [being in the] ‘Batman’ movie … and I saw the trajectory.”

Eisenberg said that life after Batman v Superman is what lead him to start writing and directing his own work, so he could take back control of his career.

“So I was like, I’ve got to direct movies. That’s why I started writing them, just to kind of keep my career afloat, really," Eisenberg explained.
